George Saunders "The Falls" https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/1996/01/22/the-falls
Tenth of December, by George Saunders. Saunders is masterful at putting us in the heads of others, and in turn, causing us to empathize with people we might normally put in categories beyond our reach or moral comfort zone. Tenth of December, Puppy and The Falls are great fodder for getting people to start talking about themselves, fears, hopes, assumptions about life, who they think they are, want to be, wish they weren't etc.
